Here's a recap of our time on the Big Island. I will hopefully get a slide show up soon but for now enjoy a few of our pictures.
Tuesday morning brought us a couple of surprises. First we had our Hawaiian Christmas complete with the presents that the good ol' Saint Nick or Saint Keith in our case brought. My eye also must have gotten something in it from the tradewinds and so it was irritated but luckily not an abrasion. Just really red and swollen. Then as the day went on Ryan got a fever and we knew he was getting an ear infection. We talked to Keith who suggested we take him to the hospital up in Waimea. Jed took him on Wednesday and he did have an ear infection and got some good ol' antibiotics.
Wednesday took the older two kids and I to the pool and slide then we wandered around what they called Buddha point and around to the lagoon. We then ate lunch and then back to the pool while Ryan took a much needed nap.
Thursday we went into Kona-Kailua to shop and eat lunch. The kids got a HUGE shave ice there and we checked out a really old church and just wandered around. Came back to the hotel and we went to the sand pool this time. Then we checked out the dolphins during their training session.
Friday we went to the lagoon pool (it's ocean fed) and the kids splashed around and Jed went out snorkeling. Then of course had to get in a couple rounds of pool slides before lunch. While Ryan napped Mackenzie and I went out and checked out the sea turtles, watched the dolphins some more and walked around the lagoon area. That night we went to the Luau. We didn't even make it to eating before Sean was asleep at the table. The rest of us ate our buffet of pig, pineapple, huli chicken, and mai tai's and watched the show.
Saturday we headed to the state park to go to the beach. We didn't know it was going to be a long road through the lava fields to get there. It was cool to see it all around us and then you reach this beachy area. Pool drama came this afternoon. We had to have wrist bands to get in the pool and use the slides. Sean is 42 1/2 in. tall and all week has been able to go on the big slide. Today the lady was working the stand decided he was NOT tall enough to go on the big slide and put a pink wristband on him. This one means you are not tall enough and so even after we argued that every other day he's been tall enough she didn't want to change it. So we broke the rules and I squeezed my hand out of my wristband and we stuck it on Sean. It all worked out and Sean had a wonderful time sliding down again and again.
Sunday we decided to go the other state park that has an actual "beach" and this time no driving through the lava fields. We drove up to Waimea to eat lunch and went by the hospital where Ryan went and then came back down to the hotel. The same lady was working today that thought Sean was not tall enough but yet today when she measured him he was suddenly tall enough!! I guess he grew over night or something.
Our last day there was Monday and we went to the pool and I even went down the water slide this time. The pool was freezing and so the kids didn't last long this time. We got everything packed up and in the car and then went to the King's Village Shopping Center by the hotel. We ate lunch there and then decided to drive up to Mauna Kea or get as close as we could. We made it to 8000 feet before we had to turn around and head down to the airport.
We left Kona at 5:15pm and got to Honolulu where we hung out for another hour or so before getting on our long flight back to Houston. Ryan fell asleep just about the time we took off and so did Sean. Mackenzie was up the entire flight up until about 30 min before we landed. Sean woke up about 1/2 way through the flight. So we were all very sleepy today and hope to get some much needed sleep in our own beds tonight!
